Iguacu Falls ( Cataratas do Iguaçu )

The Iguassu falls ( aka Iguazu, aka Iguaçu ) are located in Southern Brazil in the state of Parana on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Located along a 2.5 kilometre stretch of the Iguassu river there are approximately 300 waterfalls with heights reaching over 200 feet. The most majestic is the "Devils throat".

It is an impressive natural spectacle with a series of 275 waterfalls - the largest series of waterfalls on the planet! The largest of the Falls is Devil's Throat which is 90 metres in height.

A cloud of mist created from the plunging water can be seen kilometers away. Viewed from the Iguassu National Park, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, in Southern Brazil the falls offer a magnificent vista of mother natures creation. The new and modern visitor service complex in Foz do Iguacu, in the State of Parana, enables visitors from all over the world to appreciate this fascinating environment which is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Brazil. With special transport by colourful buses provided to access the Park and view the Falls the damage to the environment is minimized. Once at the Falls absorb the magnificent views which offer many photo opportunities. Descend by elevator to the walkways out over the Falls. Walk to the viewing platforms to see the spectacle of Devil's Throat with views across to Argentina. For the more adventurous traveller there are numerous activities to undertake through the rainforest and on the river itself. Helicopter flights are also available.

Don't leave the Park without seeing the mascot of Foz, the racoon-like coati - but be careful if carrying food! Less than 200 metres from the entrance to the National Park you can visit a multitude of species of birds and reptiles at the Bird Park in 17 hectares of preserved semi-rainforest. The colours of the toucans and macaws will amaze. Also while in Foz do Iguacu a must see is the technological and ecological wonder of Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam which supplies 95% of Paraguay's electric energy and 28% of all Brazilian consumption. Foz do Iguacu is located in the extreme west of the State of Parana with a population of 280,000.

The Brazil/Paraguay/Argentina triple frontier - The Three Frontiers - enables visitors to contemplate the vastness of the waters at the meeting of the Parana and Iguassu Rivers. The monuments consist of 3 obelisks placed on Brazilian, Paraguayan and Argentinean territory. A medieval-style amphitheatre, Forum of the Americas, is built directly in front of the meeting of the rivers on the Brazilian side. Foz do Iguacu is sister-city to Puerto Iguazu in Argentina and Cuiddad del Este in Paraguay, and tourists have the opportunity to see and experience many different ethnic groups (more than 70), languages and cultures. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the Legend of the Falls and to experience for themselves the wonders of this amazing environment.

Both Argentina & Brazil have their own national park at the falls. The Brazilian side offers panaoramic views of the Iguacu falls and the Argentinian side has bridges and paths that pass very close to them. Therefore each park has its own unique perspective and experience. Other activities in the region include visiting the Itaipu hydroelectric dam and the Macuco Safari ( take a boat to the base of the falls ). In the national park there is camping, rafting and climbing. The river above Linha Martins has trails for biking and canoeing.

The main town is Foz de Iguacu, with a population of 270,000. There is plentiful accomodation. The town is 29kms from the falls.
