The Green Coast ( Costa Verde in Portugese) is more generally known to the Brazilians as Angras or Angra dos Reis which is the main town of the region. It was discovered by the navigator Andres Gonçalves, in 1502 and the town founded shortly thereafter. The natural beauties of the costa verde are countless. They start with the color of the sea, the exuberant green of the costal Atlantic tropical forest, and an abundance of beautiful tropical islands close offshore. The Green Coast is the perfect place for nautical sports, fishing, diving, boat rides and other water sports or just lazing about on the many beaches in the area. And don't forget ecology tours or trekking through the lush tropical forest. Accomodation available in Hotels, Inns and Pousadas, catering to all budgets.
The area is only 2 to 3 hours by car from the City of Rio de Janeiro. This makes it ideal for combining the two in one vacation.
There are many activities based in and around the historical town of Angra dos Reis.
Diving ( Mergulho in Portuguese ) – courses and expeditions for all grades, from novice level and up.
Aquatic sports – jetskis, parasail, water skiing.
Sailing – rent a boat, learn to sail or just go on one of the organized trips around the islands, including Ilha grande. All types and sizes of vessels available. Rafting – go rafting down the Rio Mambucaba or Ecology tour – through the lush green tropical forest or a more arduous Trekking expedition – through the undergrowth.
Island size is a 193 sq kilometres, with a heighest peak of 1031 metres. It has many beaches, coves and is covered with tropical forest. A fascinating place and easy to imagine Blackbeard and other pirates ( Capt. Jack Sparrow! ) hiding out on this and the other 300 plus islands in the area. All close to the coast. Ideal for sailing and exploring. Other activities include, diving, camping, surfing, fishing, ecology tours, sea kayaking. Beautiful accomodation on the island. But note their are no banks or ATMs so bring sufficient cash. Also the official ferries to the island run very infrequently ( usually once a day ). Check with your destination hotel for the latest times. If travelling from Rio the nearest ferry "terminal" is Mangaratiba. If coming from Sao Paulo it is Angra Dos Reis
